Satire
Chapters 5-11Explain why Pap has Huck locked up:
Pap gets drunk a lot and Huck gets the money for him. So I think he took him away because he said that he was the only boss for Huck Finn and he didn't want the widow to take Huck away from him. He locked Huck up so that the widow wouldn't find Huck. A Visual of how Huck escapes The Shanty: What is Abolitionist? And Why is Huck concerned about people calling him that? An abolitionist is a punishment or formerly slavery. I think Huck is concerned about people calling him that because he felt like he was in a punishment with his dad and because he left his dad alone without him. What are several things that Huck gives away when he is a girl? He didn't walk like a girl, his voice, and he kept pulling up his gown Three things that would give a girl and a boy away: Boy and Girl:
Chapters 17-21Describe the Grangerford family:
They took him in as family. Emmeline made poetry about dead people when she was alive. They did cool things with each other like singing. Huck could describe each and everyone of the Grangerfords. Why would Mark Twain write that into the novel? What does it say about these two occupations at this time? The Shepherdsons were the shepherds of the sheep that they have and the Grangerfords are the granger because they farm. I think he says that because there last name would be easier to say shorter. How does our narrator’s perspective play a role in what we think and feel reading this section? The narrator's perspective plays a role because it wouldn't make since if it didn't say there was a battle the next day and it just said what Huck said. Explain who the King and the Duke are. Why does Huck go along with their story? The king and the duke dress up as someone else to take money from the dead Peter Wilks's family. Huck doesn't want anything to happen to the king and the duke even though there bad people. What problems do you anticipate with the Duke’s solution to how they can all run the raft during the day? They could get in trouble if Huck goes with them and does all the things they do to get money. Illustrate the town that the play will be held in: chapters 27-30Why did people stay up with the dead during this time period?
They stayed up with the dead during this time period because the dead in their coffin they had gold and the people thought it was safer for them to stay up and watch to see if any gold was going to be stolen. What do we learn about Huck when he tells Miss Mary Jane the slaves will see their family again inside of two weeks? Huck cares about the slaves and if they see there family again because of Jim and what he learn with Jim and about him too. Huck cares about Jim and so maybe he thought that all the slaves were like him. What were the two methods the townspeople used to try to identify who the brothers were and who the frauds were? The townspeople ask them questions like when they were at the town last and what time they were there. They only way they would know those answers are if they are the people they say they are or they were people already from the town. chapters 31-35What lie is Huck trying to pray about? What does he mean?
Huck is trying to pray about the lie that Jim is his slave and that Jim belongs to him so that he could have Jim back. Why does Huck tear up the letter he writes? Huck was taking these awful thoughts in his mind and putting them on words so that they wouldn't be in his head anymore. Then he ripped them up so no one would know what was going on in his mind. Huck is disappointed that Tom would help him steal back Jim. What do you think of this? I think that Huck doesn't believe that Tom would ever do that for anyone. But when he wanted to do it with Huck he was shocked that he said that. Huck says two things at the end of chapter 33. What does Huck mean by these two statements? People can be cruel to each other, but it doesn't matter if you are nice or cruel the conscience it paying you for what you did before that you may not do now. Why are Tom and Huck looking for a more difficult way to break Jim free? I think they are doing it the hard way because they want it to be interesting and fun for them but still be able to get Jim out. chapters 41-endWhy does Huck feel this way?
I think Huck feels that way because he has never had a mother that would do that to him and he was fine without it, but now that he has it. He wants it to go back to being the same. Can we come to an understanding about Jim from this? What do we learn about him? Jim wants to help with everything and he wants to do whatever he is doing well. What do we learn about Tom from what he says when he wakes up after being treated for the gunshot wound? Tom wants to keep trying even when he is wounded because then he wouldn't feel like a failure. In three of four sentences, what do you think of Huck. Huck is an interesting person, he cares about a lot of things. Huck has been through a lot of things but he keep trying to make it better or to get away from it. He is adventurous and likes to help and care for people. |
Chapters 1-5Timeline of Events
chapters 12-16What is the story of King Solomon and his child? How does Jim interpret that story?
King Solomon had about million wives and about five million children because of how he was raised. His child was going to be king but they locked him up in jail and some say he died in jail in France. Jim thought that the child could understand what they were saying and so he quit. When Jim wakes up after their separation in the fog, what does Jim’s reaction to Huck tell us about Jim? How do you feel about Jim at this point? I think that Jim cares about Huck because he thought he was died. Huck was gone so long that Jim got worried. Jim is very superstitious. From a historical standpoint, why do you think this is? He is worried about Huck and what would happen to him if he was not with him. What does that line in the book tell us about Huck? He cares about Jim sometimes but most of the time he doesn't because he has been taught that you aren't supposed to free slaves. The end of chapter 16 Huck is struggling with giving Jim up. Outline the battle that he has with himself, and explain his actions when the men come up looking for the 5 escaped slaves. He has a hard time giving up Jim because Jim has protected him through a lot of things. Jim has listened to what he says and cares about what happens to him. Jim was kind of like a friend to Huck through the book. chapters 22-26Why would the line at the bottom of the handbill work to get people into the play?
It is saying that if the paper doesn't get their attention then he doesn't know who will. So the people would want to do it more because it says they wouldn't. Why doesn't Huck see the use in telling Jim? I don't think that Huck tells Jim because he thinks he can do it by himself. I don't think he thinks he needs Jim's help. I also think that Huck though Jim wouldn't believe him on what he was saying about the king and the duke. What does Huck mean by " you couldn't tell them from the real kind."? I think he means that the king and the duke aren't what they say they are and Huck found that out. He also thinks that they look like the real king and duke but they aren't. What is Huck talking about? What does it tell us about Huck that he feels this way? All the things that people say about the human race, what was said would have made them ashamed of it. It tells us that Huck doesn't know what it really is, but only by his parents. How does the doctor know that the king and the duke are a fraud? The doctor knows that they are a fraud because the doctor has to know there background to check up on them. They king and the duke consider leaving in the middle of the night with the money. Why don't they? I don't think that the king and the duke left with the money because the maid would have found it when he cleans the rooms and would have told someone. chapters 36-40In the process of breaking Jim free, what is Tom's motivation? What is Huck's motivation?
Tom and Huck's motivation is that Jim is still in there and they want to get him out, so they can have him. What do Huck and Tom mean when they say they "let on" about something? Why do they do this? They covered up the rat holes for this lady and they are telling everyone about what a nice thing they did for the lady. Why is Tom writing the letters and posting warnings? Why did he give instructions to his aunt and uncle's slaves? What are his motivations for this? Huck doesn't want the slaves to go through the same thing that Jim did. His motivation was Jim. He gave his aunt an uncles slaves instructions because he wanted them to be safe. How is the planning and plotting of Jim's escape by Tom and Huck satire? They did it the hard way instead of the easier way to do it. They wanted to make sure that they wouldn't get in trouble, but it was also not an easier plan. Why does Huck say this and what does he mean? I think he said that because Jim acts like a white man and he doesn't get treated how a white man gets treated. |
